Description

Velvendos is on high ground overlooking the Aliakmon River at the point where the three battalions of 16th Australian Infantry Brigade were in 1941, ferried across the river in a punt guided by a wire rope by seven sappers under Lieutenant S.H. Cann and Corporal D.G Smeal, all of 2/1st Field Company, Royal Australian Engineers. The operation took 14 hours and after the last platoon of the 2/3rd Australian Infantry Battalion crossed the river, Corporal Smeal sank the punt and led the last men up the hill to Velvendos, Greece.
