Village of Platanias
Description
Sketched from the main road between Canea and Maleme on the northern coast of Crete. It was from this village that the New Zealand counter-attack on Maleme airfield jumped off, on the night of 21-22nd May 1941. In this action 2nd Lieutenant C.H. Upham of the 21st New Zealand Battalion won his first VC, later winning a Bar to it in North Africa in July 1942.
