Tamil [labourer] from Malaya
Description
Portrait of a Tamil labourer from Malaya. The Tamil people are an ancient civilisation, originating from the Indian subcontinent. Tamil communities are spread out in countries all across the world, including Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Singapore, and South Africa. During the Second World War when the Japanese occupied Malaysia the Tamils were, in many instances, regimented into forced labour groups and sent to the various territories under Japanese control.
