Pte 'Jock' Campbell smokes the fish
Description
By running smoke through a metal locker, the nearly-rotten fish issued as rations were preserved and given a more edible flavour. Private 'Jock' Campbell, like many others, wears an artificial leg manufactured in the camp.
The individual shown in this work may be VX36959 Lance Corporal John 'Jack' Campbell of the 2/10th Field Company RAE who bares a likeness in appearance and stature to the man depicted here. Campbell was interned at Changi following the Battle of Singapore, 1942 where he lost his left leg. Following recovery from his injuries, he contributed his time to helping others in the camp. He was recovered from Changi in August 1945 and repatriated back to Australia.
