Cooktown 1945
Description
Looking south across the mouth of the historic Endeavour River to the northerly township of Queensland. A radar station and a lighthouse crowning the summit of Grassy Hill, swept the Coral Sea. Along the beach is a monument to Captain Cook who landed here on June 17th 1770 to repair his small three mast ship "Endeavour." During the war an operational airfield was built some distance west of the town and served as an important air link in a chain of airstrips between Townsville, Horn Island and beyond Australia. It was known as an all-weather 'drome,' the Cooktown area not being subject to such heavy weather as Cairns and points south.
