Burning cane before harvesting, Gordonvale
Description
Owing to the labour shortage in the cane fields during the war, practically all ripened cane was first fired to remove superfluous leaves and trash and so make cutting easier. Cane cutting follows within 24 hours after burning. The fire, which looks fierce, only singes the stalk which is heavy with juice, Gordonvale, North Queensland.
