Mechanical cane cutter at work
Description
The inventor of this simple harvester was a Queenslander, Larry Moloney of Mackay. It has proved a valuable aid in the quick harvesting of cane during the war period, when; on most farms, there was a shortage of manpower. Two men can operate the machine which is attached to a tractor and can harvest up to 250 tons of cane in 8 hours. The hand cutting rate of two men would be approximately 6-10 tons a day. Moloney has built several machines for this purpose - each one being an improvement on the last.
