Flying Officer Hector Harrison, wireless navigator
Description
Portrait of Flying Officer Hector Harrison, wireless (radio) operator, Bomber Command, wears C-type flying helmet and oxygen mask. This is a study for the painting 'Bomber Crew'. Before the Second World War, Hector Harrison was a butcher for five years in his hometown of Lismore, New South Wales. He enlisted in the RAAF, aged 20. This portrait was made on the day of the mission undertaken by No. 460 Squadron, RAAF, from which Flying Officer Harrison was not to return.
