Sergeant J Russell
Description
Depicts a portrait of Sergeant John Lewis Russell, QX1899, 2/26 Australian Infantry Battalion, 8th Australian Division. Taken prisoner-of-war by the Japanese at the fall of Singapore. Born in Mitchell, Queensland, on 1 March 1913 Russell was working as a clerk when he enlisted in Townsville in May 1940. Russell was promoted to Warrant Officer Class 2.
John Russell died aged 30 of illness on 10th October 1943 at the Australian General Hospital in Changi and is buried in Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore. His headstone reads ' A good son/And brave soldier/Deeply mourned'.
