Men working in vegetable gardens with an improvised basket. Ceylon spinach was one of the few plants that grew well for the prisoners of Changi. With the rice ration received from the Japanese, the spinach was another staple of the POW diet. Griffin spent his 3 and a half years as a POW confined to the work parties, such as the one depicted in this drawing, in the Changi compound. He documented most of the activities of the camp, as well as scenes of the Burma-Thailand railway, which he created based on survivor testimony.
