Squadron Leader David Shannon
Description
Portrait of Squadron Leader David Shannon, DSO, DFC and Bar. As Flight Lieutenant David Shannon pilot No 617 Squadron RAF participated in the Dambusters Raid on Mohne Dam, Germany, on night of 16-17 May, 1943. Shannon holds his flight log book, which is held in the Memorial's collection. Writing to the Memorial's Director in 1963 William Dargie noted: "I thoroughly enjoyed painting David Shannon. He is a most delightful man and still, despite all his years away from home, a real, a dinkum Aussie. During the sittings, I think we both got a little homesick talking about Australia."
