Tamils are an Indian low-caste sect, many of whom inhabit Singapore and Malaya. The drawing shows a Tamil worker carrying his tool of trade - a chunkel or large hoe, the Malayan equivalent of a shovel, while his wife follows with the rest of the household possessions.
