Submarine K9
Description
HMAS K9 was a Dutch submarine which was used by the Royal Australian Navy for training purposes during the Second World War. K9 was built for the Royal Netherlands Navy and allocated for service in the Netherlands East Indies. On the night of 31st May 1942, K9 was lying in Sydney Harbour alongside the converted ferry HMAS Kuttabul. During the night a torpedo from one of the Japanese midget submarines passed under K9 and exploded when it struck the harbour bed beneath Kuttabul, sinking the latter at a cost of 21 lives.
