Loading freighters, Haifa
Description
Depicts freighters in the port of Haifa, Palestine (now in Israel) being loaded with war supplies. This was produced as part of the Syrian campaign series of 1941. The sharp linearity of the drawing draws the eye from the foreground back into the vastness of the docks. The ships are bulky and monstrous, conveying a sense of how many resources drove the war effort. The Syrian Campaign involved Australian troops, mostly from the 7th Division, fighting alongside allied troops against the Vichy French in Syria and Lebanon.
