HMAS Sydney in heavy weather
Description
Starboard side view of HMAS Sydney at sea in rough weather. HMAS Sydney was commissioned in 1913. She was responsible for the bombardment and eventual loss of the German raider SMS Emden in November 1914 off the coast of North Keeling Island. Commanded by Commodore J C T Glossop CB RN, the Sydney achieved victory in the first naval action in which an Australian warship was engaged. HMAS Sydney also became the first Royal Australian Navy vessel to be subjected to an air attack in May 1917.
