[Gallipoli soldier with rifle]
Description
Gallipoli soldier with rifle. The figure is reminiscent of antique Greek sculpture which Nolan had seen on visits to Museums in Athens and Delphi. Initially Nolan had been wanting to do a series of work on the Trojan Wars but after a visit to the Greek islands, Gallipoli and reading Alan Mooreheads 'Gallipoli', he decided to tackle Gallipoli as a means of working towards Troy.
The work was presented in memory of the artist's brother Raymond who was drowned in 1945 on returning from military service at the end of the Second World War.
