Description

Gallipoli soldier with plume and rifle, referring to links between Anzac's and Homeric soldiers. The figure is reminiscent of Ancient Greek statues such as Kouros, sculptures that were nude Greek youths. The statues embodied the idea of youth and the Archaic Greek ideal of moral and physical beauty and nobility. Nolan had initially been wanting to do a series of work on the Trojan Wars but after a visit to the Greek islands, Gallipoli and reading Alan Moorehead's book 'Gallipoli', he decided to tackle Gallipoli as a means of working towards Troy and the Homeric epics.
