Two SAS with Simpson the donkey in the Australian compound, Bagram, Afghanistan
Description
Two SAS with Simpson the donkey, in the Australian compound, Bagram. Peter Churcher recalled, "The SAS squadron had four donkeys that they purchased from the locals. The donkeys proved to be invaluable for carrying gear up steep terrain otherwise untransversable by vehicles. The four donkeys were kept on the base. All had names and were like pets. The man sitting on the tether-post in this painting personally cared for the donkeys and was telling me how honoured he was for his favourite Simpson to be included in a painting. He was clearly a little bit emotional that he would be leaving Simpson in a few days and would have to say goodbye."
