Description

Full length portrait study of Lieutenant General John Monash. Wearing a riding uniform and holding a glove and riding crop in his hands, Monash is portrayed as if he has just dismounted from his horse to survey a battlefield on the Western Front. He wears the red/white/red Corps Headquarters armband on his right arm, and the remnants of a burnt out tank shell are visible to his left. Longstaff painted this work as a study for a larger finished version, 'John Monash', commissioned by the trustees of the Art Gallery of NSW and acquired in 1919.
