L'Orgie [The orgy]
Description
Depicts an image exposing the horrors of war. At far right the corpse of a woman lies partially naked, a dagger plunged in her breast. She has evidently been raped by the group of carousing German officers, several of whom are seen playing with items of her clothing. Two other figures sprawl nearby, vomiting and stunned by drink. This is one of a series of six anti-German woodcuts by Vallotton entitled 'C'est la Guerre!' [This is war!], made in the winter of 1915-16 published and sold by the artist, which consisted of graphic and dramatic portrayals of the destruction and carnage that occurred on the Western Front in France during the First World War.
