Dans les tenebres [In the darkness]
Description
Depicts two German soldiers in the darkness engaged in fierce hand-to-hand combat with raised knives, while a terrified French soldier looks on. This is one of a series of six anti-German woodcuts by Vallotton entitled 'C'est la Guerre!' [This is war!], made in the winter of 1915-16 published and sold by the artist, which consisted of graphic and dramatic portrayals of the destruction and carnage that occurred on the Western Front in France during the First World War.
