Description

Artists sketchbook covering the campaign in the Somme Valley, May 1918. The sketchbook comprises 11 pages, two loose sheets, and three blank pages, with 11 drawings of landscapes, encampments and military bands. Places depicted include Somme River, Glisy, La Houssoye and Amiens. Sketches on the inside cover and sketches on the inside back cover. The inside front cover has various sketches of landscapes and encampments. the inside back cover has a sketch of an encampment at Villers Bocage with tents and brief sketched figures of soldiers. In the background a missile has been fired and its smoke trail is visible in the sky.
The sketchbook is bound in a hard cover covered with marbled paper. Some pages have been excised. This sketchbook is from Streeton's first official war artist commission to France 14 May-13 August 1918 where he worked mainly around the Somme battlefields.
