Description
This painting captures the mountainous landscape of Beirut, including a boat at anchor in the harbour and cumulous white clouds and mountains in the distance.
This work was most probably made during Lambert's return to the Middle East as part of the Gallipoli revisited tour with Charles Bean in 1919. The significance of Australians in Beirut would have been well known by Lambert as he served as an official war artist in Palestine in 1917. The ANZAC mounted division reinforced by a few infantry battalions made their way up the coast of Lebanon from Haifa to Beirut and capturing the city on 8 October 1918. This victory was key to General Allenby's campaign in the Palestine Campaign.
