The evil of mixed bathing

Depicts a young couple, the man in a Life Saving Club bathing suit, holding the hand of a small child, while beside him stands a woman in a bathing suit holding a large bird. Behind them are other bathers, walking into the sea. Beside the couple are an elderly man, dressed in 19th century clothing, holding an umbrella and wearing a top hat with the words 'STICKY BEAR' on it. An elderly, conservatively dressed woman stands beside him, 'MRS. GRUNDY', holding two placards, one with the words 'The Shameless neck to knee beware the beach' and the other 'The Sin of Sea Bathing'. This cartoon was published in the Melbourne 'Herald' in March 1928.

Will Dyson was the first Australian official war artist to visit the front during the First World War, travelling to France in December 1916, remaining there until May 1917, making records of the Australian involvement in the war. He was formally appointed as an official war artist, attached to the AIF, in May 1917, working in France and London throughout the war. His commission was terminated in March 1920.
