Britons. Join your country's army
This poster is a 1968 reproduction of one of the most well known British First World War posters and one of the most famous and influential images of war propaganda: Field Marshal Lord Kitchener in his uniform, pointing his index finger at the viewer. Before the First World War, Kitchener had already established a formidable reputation, both as war hero and as a powerful administrator. He was known as Kitchener of Khartoum for quelling unrest in Sudan, and was also regarded as the architect of victory in the second Boer war. His role as a chief administrator spanned a career in both Egypt and India. Thus, his reputation combined with his position as Secretary of State for War, lent great authority to this recruiting poster.
This image was first published on the cover of the 'London Opinion' magazine in 1914, and was distributed until 1916. The compelling image of a man pointing at the viewer and asking for 'you' to join the army, was re-used by the United States who replaced Kitchener with Uncle Sam.
