Description

Poster issued by the Commonwealth War Loans Office to promote the First Victory Loan (28th March - 9th May 1944) which followed on closely after four successfully subscribed Liberty Loans. The target set for the First Victory Loan was one hundred and fifty million. On announcing the loan Prime Minister John Curtin stressed to the Australian public that the emphasis was to be on the word 'First' rather than 'Victory' and there was to be no premature rejoicing. He also indicated that there was likely to be a Second, Third and even Fourth Victory Loan campaigns.

This poster features a humorous depiction of a man falling asleep under a copy of a newspaper whose headlines declare "Victory for the Allies". The title echoes the concerns of the Government by reminding viewers that despite the early signs of Victory full support was still required to win the war.
