A view of Magdhaba, looking south-east, east, and north-east. The enemy settlement where some 2,000 Turkish troops, having retired before the British about twenty-five miles up the Wady el Arish, south of El Arish village, occupied a series of entrenched posts surrounding the buildings shown in the photograph. The Anzac Mounted Division, less the 2nd Light Horse Brigade but with the Imperial Camel Corps Brigade attached, marched under Major-General Henry George (Harry) Chauvel up the Wady el Arish during the whole night of 1916-12-22. After fighting, dismounted, all the next day, the Anzacs and camels overran the position shortly before dark, and took about 1,500 prisoners.
