Sapper (Spr) Mervyn Chesson of Croydon Park, SA, probes cautiously for a mine with his bayonet while Spr Kevin Atkinson of Merretin, WA, checks for other mines with a detector. The two soldiers, from the 1st Field Squadron, Royal Australian Engineers (RAE), were attached to a troop of armoured personnel carriers (APCs) from B Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, which was sweeping an area twenty miles east of the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) base at Nui Dat. The sweep resulted in the destruction of a Viet Cong vegetable garden which was hidden in a patch of jungle.
