In the background a group of people stands on a pontoon at the edge of the Suez Canal. On the far bank of the canal is an army camp. In the foreground several men are engaged in completing the pontoon (floating) bridge, which is constructed from planks laid over barrels or metal drums. Spare timber is lying on the ground beside the bridge. Defence of the Suez Canal was the task of the troops based here.
