Description
Unidentified troops of the 23rd Battalion at the Anzac pillbox (reinforced concrete defence post), which served as headquarters for the battalion in the period leading up to the battle of Broodseinde Ridge on 4 October 1917. The 18th Battalion had captured it from the 15 strong German garrison (armed with two machine guns) on 20 September. In front of the soldier on the far left is a roll of signal wire; beside it is a roll of barbed wire wrapped in hessian. Standing upright against the wall of the pillbox is a short magazine Lee Enfield (SMLE) rifle.
