Description
The transport HMAT Orvieto (A3) seen from the transport HMAT Wiltshire (A18) at the Egyptian port. An Orient liner, the Orvieto was requisitioned for use as an Australian transport and was the flagship of the first Australian convoy; she was fitted to carry 209 officers, 1425 other ranks and 22 horses. During this voyage she carried Major General William Throsby Bridges, commanding AIF, and his staff; the Headquarters of the 2nd and 3rd Infantry Brigades, and the 5th Battalion.
