Turkish and Australian troops burying their dead in No Man's Land on the day of the armistice, ...
Description
Turkish and Australian troops burying their dead in No Man's Land on the day of the armistice, seen from an old trench formerly occupied by British Marines. The line visible in the middle distance indicates a German officers' trench. During the nights between the making of the agreement and the armistice day, Anzac patrols gathered large numbers of rifles from the dead to prevent the Turks from obtaining them. Firing stopped at 7.30 am; on each side burial parties worked all day between the lines to bury the dead found in its half of No-Man's Land. The rest of the troops remained in their trenches, observing through loopholes. Conflict was renewed when a Turkish sniper opened fire at 4.45 pm.
