Description
An avenue of trees lining the Albert-Bapaume road, seen from the outskirts of the town of Pozieres, before the First World War. This road became the main supply artery for the allied forces during the Somme offensive, and was patrolled by Anzac police staff to minimise congestion on the heavily trafficked highway. The famous Pozieres windmill, later destroyed by shell fire, is faintly visible to the left of the road. The windmill marked the highest point of the bitterly contested Pozieres Ridge, an objective captured after a month of fighting by Australians of the 1st, 2nd and 4th Divisions on 4 August 1916.
