Decorative cigarette case : Private J C Burgess, 3 Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment
Black metal cigarette case with a decorative scene embossed and overlaid with gold and silver on the front. The scene depicts a snow covered Mount Fuji in the background. In front of this is a small peak with a cluster of traditional Japanese houses and a temple gateway. This scene is repeated in greater detail on a small hill in the foreground of the scene. A temple gateway is situated to the left of two traditional Japanese houses that are set in a garden. The case is hinged along the left side and there is a slide opening to the right. A strip of brass links forms an elasticised band for securing the cigarettes across the right panel.
Purchased by 2/400460 Private Jim C Burgess who served in 3 Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR) during the Korean War. Burgess enlisted in K Force as a volunteer on 13 July 1951. He trained at Ingleburn Camp in Sydney before moving to Japan for further training. He was posted to Korea in December 1951 and served in C Company, 9 Platoon, 3RAR. After completing his tour of duty he returned to Japan in December 1952. In January 1953 he transferred to the Royal Corps of Australia Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in Kure, Japan where he served until July of that year.
