Julius Gipkens (1883 -c. 1968) was a German graphic artist , draftsman and painter , who worked mainly as a commercial artist and successful poster artist in Berlin. After his initial training, he began arts and crafts work. He decorated shop windows in Berlin and designed exhibitions. He was responsible for various journals including the 'Simplicissimus' . He was a member of the Deutscher Werkbund . He designed innovatively designed advertising posters, including one in 1907 for the shoe company Leiser and in 1913 a poster with a single Kohlebrikett for the company "Emperor". His style often has a Rococo elegance. During the First World War he designed posters for war bonds or issues of German war booty. During the Weimar Republic , he designed promotional graphics and packaging for companies and also created a series of graphics for book covers and designed wall paper. In 1933 he emigrated to the United States and little is known about his life until his death in 1968.
