Informal group portrait of gun layers of HMAS Sydney who survived the Sydney- Emden action. Identified from left to right, back row: 7906 Able Seaman (AB) George Auldren Hoar; 7899 Gun Position Officer (GPO) Arthur William Lambert; and 8214 Petty Officer (PO) Bertie John Atkins.
Front row: 7918 PO Frank Richard Etheridge; 8007 PO James Edward Newham; and 7980 PO Thomas Young.
Two other gun layers, 7902 PO Thomas Lynch and 8003 AB Reginald Albert Sharpe were killed during the action with the SMS Emden. PO Lynch was killed in action on 9 November and AB Sharpe died from wounds on 10 November 1914.
