Description
Small boats full of spectators crowd into Circular Quay to witness the departure of the New South Wales contingent to the Soudan (Sudan) War. On the 3 March 1885 the contingent, an infantry battalion of 522 men and 24 officers and an artillery battery of 212 men, marched through the streets of Sydney down to Circular Quay and boarded the two white hulled troopships, the SS Australasia, on the left, and the twin funnelled SS Iberia, on the right, and sailed for the Soudan. The multi storyed building behind the SS Iberia is the wool and produce store of wool brokers, Hill, Clark and Company.
