Description
Buildings at Larrakeyah Barracks taken from South South East. By 1937 the Barracks was completed, but the garrison numbered only 50. Construction of coastal defences at Emery Point was undertaken after it was decided in 1930 to close down the Garrison at Thursday Island. The first men from the Royal Australian Artillery arrived in 1933, followed by a detachment of Royal Australian Engineers, later to be known as the 7th Fortress Company. Five more oil tanks were commissioned at that time. A Naval Depot opened in Darwin in January 1935 with a primary mission of operating as a naval reserve facility. By 1936, four 6 inch coastal guns had been installed - two at Emery Point and two at East Point.
