Awarded to 5340 Private Robert Gardner of 25 Battalion, AIF. Gardner, from Brisbane, Queensland, was working as a draper at the time of his enlistment on 9 February 1916. He sailed for the Western Front on the troopship A50 'Itonus' on 8 August, 1916 and returned to Australia on 20 December 1918.
