Description

Pope's Hill, the Chessboard and Quinn's Post seen from a niche in the side of Monash Valley on the Gallipoli Peninsula. An armistice was observed on this day to allow both sides to bury their dead. During the nights between the making of the agreement and the armistice day, Anzac patrols gathered large numbers of rifles from the dead to prevent the Turks from obtaining them. Firing stopped at 7.30 am; on each side burial parties worked all day between the lines to bury the dead found in its half of No-Man's Land. The rest of the troops remained in their trenches, observing through loopholes. Conflict was renewed when a Turkish sniper opened fire at 4.45 pm.
