Description

Collection of N235561 Carrington Reuel Street relating to his work as Chief Interpreter for Italians, French and Germans in internment camps in New South Wales between 1944 and 1946. It includes a notebook containing records of prisoners and their work contracts for the period September-December 1944, listing the prisoners name and number, the employers name and the dates employed. There are typed orders, rules and instructions for conduct of prisoner of war camps at Singleton, Bathurst, Narellan, Liverpool, Newcastle and Nelson Bay. The majority are in Italian. A range of correspondence in the collection includes letters, written in Italian, between Street and Italian prisoners dated 1945-1950 and letters, 1946-1951, in Italian relating to Street's career in Italy as an opera singer prior to the war. Other documents in Italian include an extract from a transcript of judicial proceedings involving a prisoner, part of a Statutory Declaration, a statement by a prisoner and an account by prisoner 55327 Isidoro of a road accident that occurred on 2 August 1945. The collection also includes a copy of Street's discharge certificate, a sheet of colour photocopies of six photographs depicting Street and others and copy of his obituary from the Norther Star newspaper, Lismore, 2 November 2002.
