Description

After the Battle of Britain, the British had to focus their attention on the growing U-boat menace in the Atlantic. Side one of this cassette explores the Battle of the Atlantic. A gunner aboard the HMS Ajax describes his ship's encounter with the Graf Spee. A German U-boat captain recounts the sinking of the HMS Courageous. Convoy and corvette duty is also described by participants. The actualities include a see-and-destroy mission in a "hot" submarine zone in the Atlantic. Side two covers the air war. Mass bombing raids were made on civilian as well as military targets. Reporters describe mass raids in Europe as well as incendiary raids over Japan. Included among the actualities is a daylight bombing raid over Japan recorded amid heavy anti-aircraft fire.
