First in the fight always faithful: Be a U.S. Marine
Description
First World War recruitment poster one of 5 designed for the U.S. Marines by artists working for the Division of Pictorial Publicity. It features a full length portrait of a U.S. Marine in full uniform facing the viewer. He is holding a revolver in his right hand. Behind him the 'stars and stripes' hang as a backdrop. The title text printed in blue ink is positioned beneath and uses some of the motto of the U.S. Marine Corps ' First to Fight Always Faithful'. Both the image and text are set against a white background. Another version of this design by Flagg was used with just the slogan 'Be a U.S Marine!' across the bottom with room to print where to go to enlist.
