Jones, Ernest (Private, b.1907)
Correspondence written by NX15529 Private Ernest Jones, 2/4 Battalion, to his sister between 1941-1943. The five letters relate to his internment as a German Prisoner of War in Stalag VIII A, after the Greece-Crete campaign. They commence 12 November 1941, and include one for each month of March-May 1942, with the last dated November 1943. Jones relates information about camp life, such as the cold weather, enjoying a bottle of beer which the prisoners are allowed to buy each week, 10 hour working days at the weaving mills, receiving Red Cross parcels and his capture in Greece in 1941. He also mentions the increasing delays in receiving letters from home and apologises for not answering. Jones survived his capture and returned to Australia in late 1945.
