Packaging cloth : Driver A J Gimbert, 2/18 Battalion
Calico packaging cloth. One side of the cloth has the sender's details written in purple ink 'From MAVIS CHANNELLS URUNGA N.S.W'. The recipient's details are written beneath this twice with a mixture of purple, blue and black ink, the details read 'NX71463 PTE. J.P. BRADLEY 2nd Reinforcements 2/18 BAT A. Co. GENERAL BASE DP. MALAYA'. The reverse side of the cloth has a paper customs declaration attached with details of sender Driver A J Gimbert. The customs declaration also lists the original contents of the package as '1 table-cloth, 1 serviette, 2 books, 1 bracelet'. Next to this in purple ink are the details of the sender 'From NX31033 Dvr., a.j. Gimbert H.Q. Coy 2/18 Bn A.I.F MALAYA'. Underneath this, written in black ink, are the details of the recipient 'To Mrs. A. J. Gimbert ADELAIDE. ST., Murrurundi N.S.W. Aust.,' with the postage paid stamp marked 'JOHORE'. The cloth has original cream cotton stitching in areas, particularly on the top left corner, where it has been sewn around a parcel.
First used by Mavis Channells of Urunga, NSW, who addressed the package to NX71463 Private John Percival Bradley of 2/18 Battalion, Australian Imperial Force (AIF). Bradley, reusing the material, sent a package to NX31033 Driver Arthur John Gimbert of 2/18 Battalion, AIF in Johore, Malaya. Gimbert later returned the material to Australia addressing the package to Mrs A J Gimbert.
