Description

White cardboard box designed to hold five 0.5 ml Anthrax vaccinations, used by Able Seaman Medic Rowbottom, HMAS Darwin. The box no longer contains vaccine, but the instruction leaflet is present. Three sides of the packaging are printed in black with the words '5 x 0.5 ml ANTHRAX VACCINE', while the fourth is marked 'Batch number: 413 Exp: FEB 2004.' The front and back of the box are both identically marked '5 x 0.5 ml ANTHRAX VACCINE Active ingredient: Anthrax antigens (alum precipitated sterile filtrate): not less than 0.125ml. Suspension for injection Other ingredients: Aluminium potassium sulphate, sodium chloride and purified water. Preservative: Thiomersal 0.005% w/v. Keep out of the reach of children. Store between 2ºC and 8ºC - DO NOT FREEZE Directions for use by the health professional: SHAKE WELL. DOSE 0.5 ml by intramuscular injection - see accompanying leaflet for further instructions and precautions before use. POM PL holder is the Secretary of State for Health, Department of Health PH 6.3A, Area 602A, Skipton House, 80 London Road, London SE1 6LH. The box was stored in the right hand breast pocket of Rowbottom's overalls (REL31426.001).

History / Summary

Box for anthrax vaccinations used by Able Seaman Medic Rowbottom aboard HMAS Darwin en route to the Persian Gulf in 2003. Rowbottom's duties on board included instruction in the self-administration of anti nerve agent drugs and the vaccination of crew members against anthrax.
