Description

Printed handkerchief made for the March 1917 Reinforcements, Field Artillery, AIF. The handkerchief is made of white cotton fabric, printed in black with the names of the reinforcing troops, their officers, and of the senior Army and ship's officers aboard HMAT A74 ('Marathon') for the voyage to England. A photographic image of the ship is also reproduced.

History / Summary

Associated with the service of 33806 Gunner Edward William Smith, 104 Howitzer Battery, AIF, whose name appears in the final column of the list of reinforcements. Smith enlisted in November 1916, embarked for service in May 1917, and spent the remainder of the war on the Western Front. He died in 1981 at the age of 88. The handkerchief was sent as a parting gift to a friend, who later gave it to Smith's daughter.
