Members of the 2/18 Battalion embarking on a ferry to board the Queen Mary (QTX) at Darling Harbour. Identified in the foreground: mounting the gangplank from the top is NX33552 Private (Pte) Colin John Spence of Longueville, NSW (originally of Dunedin, NZ); NX27457 Private Trevor Davies, of Cremorne, NSW, (later died as a Prisoner of War (POW) on 27 April 1945); NX40767 Corporal Henry Frederick (Harry) Noakes of Tamworth, NSW; NX50181 Lance Corporal David (Dave) Annand of Five Dock, NSW, (later died as a POW on 14 April 1945). Pte Spence was severely wounded by a Japanese officer wielding a sword, and was evacuated from Singapore on the last ship; Harry Noakes was taken POW and was discharged on 22 November 1945 after his release.
