Description
A general view of the city of Albert situated on the River Ancre near its junction with the Somme. The city was severly damaged by artillery fire in early 1916 during the fighting between British and German forces. On the right is the great red brick church of Notre Dame-de-Brebieres, which was damaged in the shelling and from the broken tower of which the gilded statue of the Virgin and Child hung at right angles as if diving into the street far below.
