A man short: are you the man
Australian First World War recruitment poster. It depicts a tug-of-war between four German soldiers and three Australian soldiers. A signpost in the middle points to 'oppression' on the German side, and to 'freedom' on the Australian side. The Germans are losing the tug-of-war, and are slowly being dragged across a line in the sand marked 'Victory'. However, as there are only three Australians left on the team (one member has collapsed behind them) the victory is in doubt. The flags behind the teams are of historical note, as neither were used for long after the Great War. The Australian flag is the 'Red Ensign', and the German flag is the black, white and red of the German Empire. The title, in white letters on a purple background, runs across the top and the bottom of the poster. A purple border frames the whole.
